Opening Responsive Litany | Immanuel | New Kilpatrick Parish Church, Glasgow, Scotland, UK

there is a place somewhere deep in the corners of our world
where this season has been preparing from a time before we can remember

quietly moving in us through the ages with the sound of hope –
it is found in a hint of an ancient voice calling us into something new

a prophetic whisper formed by a truth
now ready to be born between us in that space that is the shape of a relationship –
that holds the sound of our coming together
that knows the touch of what we can create between us – the space where hope is born

somewhere deep in the corners of our world this season shifts once more and takes for itself a
name – an advent name – born through struggle and hope – honed by waiting and
scarred by fear – a name that is only a whisper as yet – Immanuel

Opening Song | “Helpless and Hungry” with “What Child is This” | #215
Congregation sing vs 1 and 2 of “What Child is This” – as directed
Cong. sings vs. 3 of “What Child is This” while choir simultaneously sings vs. 3 of “Helpless and Hungry”

CHOIR – “Helpless and Hungry” – Verse 1

Helpless and hungry, lowly, afraid, wrapped in the chill of mid-winter;
comes now among us, born into poverty’s embrace, new life for the world.
Who is this who lives with the lowly, sharing their sorrows, knowing their hunger?
This is Christ, revealed to the world in the eyes of a child, a child of the poor.

CONGREGATION – “What Child is This” – Verse 1
What child is this who, laid to rest, on Mary’s lap is sleeping,
whom angels greet with anthems sweet, while shepherds watch are keeping?
This, this is Christ the King, whom shepherds guard and angels sing.
Haste, haste to bring him laud, the babe, the son of Mary!

CHOIR – “Helpless and Hungry” – Verse 2
Who is the stranger here in our midst, looking for shelter among us?
Who is the outcast? Who do we see amid the poor, the children of God? REFRAIN
Who is this who lives with the lowly, sharing their sorrows, knowing their hunger?
This is Christ, revealed to the world in the eyes of a child, a child of the poor.

CONGREGATION – “What Child is This” – Verse 2
Why lies he in such mean estate where ox and ass are feeding?
Good Christian, fear, for sinners here the silent Word is pleading.
Nails, spear shall pierce him through, the cross be borne for me, for you.
Hail, hail, the Word-made-flesh, the babe, the son of Mary!

CONGREGATION – “What Child is This” – Verse 3
So bring him incense, gold, and myrrh; come, peasant, king, to own him.
The King of kings salvation brings; let loving hearts enthrone him.
Raise, raise the song on high; the virgin sings her lullaby.
Joy, joy, for Christ is born, the babe, the son of Mary!

CHOIR – “Helpless and Hungry” – Verse 3
Bring all the thirsty, all who seek peace; bring those with nothing to offer.
Strengthen the feeble, say to the frightened heart: “Fear not: here is your God!”
Who is this who lives with the lowly, sharing their sorrows, knowing their hunger?
This is Christ, revealed to the world in the eyes of a child, a child of the poor.

Ellen Gilbert, organ

Scripture Focus | Isaiah 64:1-9

64 Oh, that you would rend the heavens and come down, that the mountains would tremble before you!
2 As when fire sets twigs ablaze and causes water to boil,
come down to make your name  known to your enemies and cause the nations to quake before you!
3 For when you did awesome things that we did not expect, you came down, and the mountains trembled before you.
4 Since ancient times no one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any God besides you, who acts on behalf of those who wait for You.
5 You come to the help of those who gladly do right, who remember your ways. But when we continued to sin against them, you were angry. How then can we be saved?
6 All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away.
7 No one calls on your name or strives to lay hold of you; or you have hidden your face from us and have given us over to our sins.
8 Yet you, God, are our God. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand.
9 Do not be angry beyond measure, God; do not remember our sins forever. Oh, look on us, we pray, for we are all your people.
10  Your sacred cities have become a wasteland; even Zion is a wasteland, Jerusalem a desolation.
11  Our holy and glorious temple, where our ancestors praised you, has been burned with fire, and all that we treasured lies in ruins.
12  After all this, LORD, will you hold yourself back?  Will you keep silent and punish us beyond measure?
