McPherson First Church of the Brethren
We invite your active participation in the life of this congregation, as together we continue to grow in grace and seek justice for God’s creation.

Sunday, July 19, 2020 | JOY

Welcome

Opening Music | “By the Gentle Waters” | arranged by Cindy Berry
Ellen Gilbert, Pianist

Children’s Story | “Everywhere, Wonder!” by Matthew Swanson; illustrated by Robbi Behr
This incredibly touching book just might be the perfect primer for joy hunting. It reminds us that we each have our
own, joyful stories made up of the marvelous things we notice each day. Best of all, the book celebrates both the
grand wonders we can only imagine and the wonders that hide right in front of us.

Prayer Time | Prayer for Joy | written by Rev. Terri C. Pilarski
Inspired by 2 Corinthians 5:17

Scripture Focus | Psalm 16 | CJB (Complete Jewish Bible)
Protect me, God, for you are my refuge.
I said to Adonai, “You are my God; I have nothing good outside of you.”
The holy people in the land are the ones who are worthy of honor; all my pleasure is in them.
Those who run after another god multiply their sorrows;
To such [other] gods I will not offer drink offerings of blood or take their names on my lips.
Adonai, my assigned portion, my cup: you safeguard my share.
Pleasant places were measured out for me; I am content with my heritage.
I bless Adonai, my counselor; at night my inmost being instructs me.
I always set Adonai before me; with [Adonai] at my right hand, I can never be moved;
so my heart is glad, my glory rejoices, and my body too rests in safety;
for you will not abandon me to Shēol, you will not let your faithful one see the Abyss.
You make me know the path of life; in your presence is unbounded joy, in your right hand eternal delight.

Message | “The Joy Before Us” | Kathryn Whitacre

Sending Music | “Joy” | by J.S. Bach
