*Opening Words

We gather: a community of faith in God’s subversive world.

We gather to celebrate that no darkness can extinguish light,

to remember that love will always be more powerful than death,

and to trust that peace will always be stronger than violence.

We gather, people of faith in the light of God’s world.

Welcome to worship.    – written by Cheryl Lawrie

Community Prayer     Bright Star, Holy One

Bright Star, Holy One – Hear our prayer.

Be with those who suffer – struggle, cry out, weep –

are in pain of heart – or soul or mind.

From the darkness and anger – may Your glory arise!

Bright Star, Holy One

Fill the hearts of leaders, nations, cities, and faith communities –

With wisdom and grace

From the despair – may Your glory arise!

Bright Star, Holy One

Lead our leaders in your way, your hope, your love and

your peace – enlighten the pathways

With the Glory of God – may we arise!

Bright Star, Holy One

Laugh with those who laugh this day, lift up our joys,

our hope is found in You

In Your Light – may Glory arise!

Bright Star, Holy One

Help us in all we do, and say, and are

to be your love shining forth

May the glory of God arise.

Bright Star, Holy One – hear our prayer. AMEN

Scripture Foci

Isaiah 60:6

A multitude of camels shall cover you, the young camels of Midian (western Saudi Arabia, southern Jordan, southern Israel) and Ephah (possibly Northern Arabia); all those from Sheba (possibly Ethiopia) shall come. They shall bring gold and frankincense, and shall proclaim the praise of the LORD.

Psalm 72:10

May the kings of Tarshish (possibly Southern Spain) and of the isles render him tribute, may the kings of Sheba (possibly Ethiopia) and Seba (Democratic Republic of Congo) bring gifts.

Matthew 2:1-2 & 11

In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, (Jordan called the

area ad-difa’a al-gharbiya {translated into English as the “West Bank”} “Yehuda” is the Hebrew term used for the area in modern Israel since the region was captured and occupied by Israel in 1967) wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, “Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage.”

On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, (Witwatersrand Basin {Johannesburg, South Africa 40% of all of the gold ever mined has come out of the Basin})  frankincense, (82% of the product comes from Somalia, with some frankincense also gathered in adjacent Southern Arabia and Ethiopia, Sudan, and other central African countries) and myrrh (southern Arabian peninsula {Oman, Yemen} and in northeast Africa {Somalia} with the primary species relied upon today being: Commiphora myrrha).

*Sending Song    “Sent Forth By God’s Blessing”

Sent forth by God’s blessing, our true faith confessing,

the people of God from this dwelling take leave.

Our faith ever sharing, in love ever caring,

embracing the children of each tribe and race.

With Your WORD You feed us, with your grace now lead us,

unite us as one in this life that we share.

Then may all our living with praise and thanksgiving give honor

to You and Your light that we bear.
