In Memoriam — Donna Burkholder

Donna Burkholder, 90, passed away peacefully on April 22, 2018 in Avon, Indiana. She was born on Nov. 28, 1927 in McPherson, to Elva (Burr) and Joseph Bowman. Donna graduated from McPherson High School in 1945 and McPherson College in 1949. She taught mathematics at Moundridge High School the next year. On June 25, 1950 she was united in marriage to John H Burkholder at the McPherson Church of the Brethren. Donna then joined John in Chicago, Illinois for three years as he completed his PhD. They returned to McPherson in 1953 when John was hired as a professor at McPherson College. Donna taught piano lessons for over 25 years until her retirement in 1991. Every year she would host a student piano recital in her home for the families of the students. She also enjoyed cooking and baking (especially pies), tending her flower gardens, decorating her home, crocheting, sewing, traveling and camping with John and their four children. Donna served on various committees at the McPherson Church of the Brethren as well as singing in the choir and playing handbells. Donna is preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her son, David. She will be lovingly remembered by her sister, Jo Ann Masterson of Louisville, Colorado; son, Phil (Susan) Burkholder of Brownsburg, Indiana; son, Doug (Mary) Burkholder of Claremont, North Carolina; daughter, Debbie Noffsinger of Elgin, Illinois; and grandchildren Linda, Elizabeth, Sarah, Victor, Krystal, Mary, Tim, Evan, Caleb as well as nine great-grandchildren. The family will be celebrating Donna’s life at a later date. Memorials may be given in Donna’s honor to the McPherson Church of the Brethren or McPherson College.
