Welcome/Sharing Time

Focusing Music    “Spirit of God, Descend Upon My Heart”    – arr. David Johnson

Unison Opening Prayer

O God who wrestles with us – circle our hearts, center our minds, still our bodies – be present to us now.  Amen

Special Music    “Gentle Arms of Eden”    – Dave Carter

On a sleepy endless ocean when the world lay in a dream

There was rhythm in the splash and roll, but not a voice to sing

So the moon shone on the breakers and the morning warmed the waves

Till a single cell did jump and hum for joy as though to say

This is my home, this is my only home

This is the only sacred ground that I have ever known

And should I stray in the dark night alone

Rock me goddess in the gentle arms of Eden

Then the day shone bright and rounder ‘til the one turned into two

And the two into ten thousand things, and old things into new

And on some virgin beach head one lonesome critter crawled

And he looked about and shouted out in his most astonished drawl

This is my home …

Then all the sky was buzzin’ and the ground was carpet green

And the wary children of the wood went dancin’ in between

And the people sang rejoicing when the field was glad with grain

This song of celebration from their cities on the plain

This is my home …

Now there’s smoke across the harbor, and there’s factories on the shore

And the world is ill with greed and will and enterprise of war

But I will lay my burden in the cradle of your grace

And the shining beaches of your love and the sea of your embrace

This is my home …

Call to Worship (based on Psalm 145: 1; 17-21)

One:  I will exalt you, my God; and bless your name for ever and ever.

All:  Every day I will bless you; and praise your name for ever and ever.

One:  You are great, O God, and greatly to be praised; your greatness is unsearchable.

All:  Generation to generation will praise your doings; and declare your mighty deeds.

One:  They will speak of the glory of your splendor; I will meditate on your marvelous works.

All:  You are just in all your ways, O God; and faithful in all your doings.

One:  You are near to all who call on you; to all who call on you in truth.

All:  You take care of the desires of all who fear you; their cry for help you will hear, and you will save them.

One:  O God, you watch over all who love you; the wicked you will destroy.

All:  My mouth will speak the praise of God; and all flesh will bless your holy name.    – written by Jeff Shrowder

Prayers of the People (based on Matthew 14: 13-21 and Psalm 145: 15-16)

One:  Loving God, You are our Creator and Sustainer.

When You open Your hand, You satisfy the hunger and thirst of every living thing.

And so we look to You whenever we are in need, trusting in Your love and Your abundant goodness.

All:  As You once fed the hungry crowds with five loaves and two small fish, we ask that You would again fill those who are empty this day. Pour out Your Spirit on all who hunger and thirst.

We pray for those who are physically hungry – whose stomachs are empty.

We think especially of the people in this world who are facing critical food shortages; who are suffering the effects of malnutrition and starvation; and watching helplessly as loved ones die.

One:  Lord, in Your mercy, open Your hand. Pour out Your Spirit, so that they may be filled.

All:  We pray for those who are empty emotionally – who are lonely and long for companionship and love, who are caught in the grip of depression, or overwhelmed with grief.

One:  Lord, in Your mercy, open Your hand. Pour out Your Spirit, so that they may be filled.

All:  We pray for those who are spiritually empty – who are troubled, but don’t know where to turn; who long for purpose and meaning, but don’t know where to look; who need You, but do not yet know You.

One:  Lord, in Your mercy, open Your hand. Pour out Your Spirit, so that they may be filled.

All:  God, we praise You for Your abundant gifts in our lives. Pour out Your Spirit on us as well. Fill us with Your compassion and love, so that we would willingly share some of our abundance with those who have need.

One:  Lord, in Your mercy, open Your hand. Pour out Your Spirit, so that we may be filled.

All:  We pray in the name of Jesus, who came so that all of humanity might come to know the abundant life that comes from You. Amen.
